Welcome to the literacy page. Here you will find a variety of resources to support your child’s literacy progress across the curriculum, as well as information and celebrations of words, in all their glorious forms!

Who is this for?

  • Students who want to practise their reading, writing or oracy skills outside of class

  • Students who want practical strategies and tips for how to complete work for any subject where literacy is a barrier

  • Parents who want to know how to support their child at home

We have:

  • Recommended reading for pleasure book lists from the English department

  • Some of our Random Acts of Literature which can usually be found in odd places around the school

  • A pack of activities to support your child’s reading comprehension, based on an extract from The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett

  • Reading support activities which can be applied to any text when a student is struggling to make sense of it

  • A list of academic vocabulary for students

  • A guide for how to write an email

  • A guide for how to write in different forms

  • A guide for how to plan and prepare for a piece of writing

  • A guide to using the different punctuation marks

  • A pack of activities for your child to work through to practise using punctuation

  • A public speaking opportunity from the English Speaking Union

  • A list of speaking challenges to increase verbal confidence

  • Some discussion-based activities for you to do at home.

You will also find details of the Student-Parent workshop delivered to Year 7 parents on how to support your child’s literacy at home.

Also, in very exciting news, we are launching the Waingels Microfiction Creative Writing Competition. Full details are on the slide below. The closing date is Monday 1st June at 9pm and entries must be sent to Winners will have their work published on our website.
