Careers Next Steps

Students in the Sixth Form achieve very well and are well prepared for their next steps- Ofsted 2023

Our students leave Waingels Sixth Form with the skills and attributes to make a success of the next stage of their careers. Our highest performing students progress to Russell Group and other highly ranked universities. A number of students have undergone rigorous application processes to gain apprenticeship places at various prestigious companies.

Students will be provided with an extensive range of support with their Post – 18 Next Steps during their time in Waingels Sixth Form. They have access to a dedicated online platform: Unifrog, which should be used to research careers paths and opportunities associated with them.

Students will also receive diverse careers support through the school’s Careers Adviser, enrichment lessons, opportunities shared through tutor and attendance at local careers events. With over 65% of students each year applying to university we are well positioned to support students through the application process. This will be done through UCAS and finance talks, personal statement workshops and individual support from tutors. We also support a number of students applying for apprenticeships with interview and application writing workshops and 1-1 support.

Reach Programme

Our Reach Programme has been developed to support and empower students who have their hearts set on applying to study highly academic courses at the most competitive universities, including Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry and/or Veterinary Sciences.  Students will get the opportunity to investigate their options early, benefiting from specific resources and targeted help from experienced staff.  Students will receive advice regarding the application process, admissions examinations and interviews.  Through a mixture of group work and one-to-one guidance, students will be encouraged to develop their super-curricular knowledge, understanding and skills to develop their confidence in competing for these highly sought-after places.

The Sixth Form at Waingels prides itself in offering many such opportunities, such as online courses, the Extended Project Qualification, careers advice, work experience support, positions in student leadership, student voice, and enrichment.  Those students who are keen, committed and determined to apply to Oxford or Cambridge will also benefit from our links with Wellington College, who support our programme through the Independent State Schools Partnership, as well as our links to University College, Oxford, and Corpus Christi College and Trinity College, Cambridge.  Students will be invited to join our Reach programme early into Year 12, building on the support many students have received through the Triple A programme since Year 8, as well as the new Aspire group established this year.
