Geography Trip to Norway
In late October some geography students in Year 11 and 13 had the opportunity to go on a trip to Norway.
On the first day straight after we landed in Bergen Airport, we hopped on a coach to Steindalsfossen, a 50m waterfall. After taking many aesthetic, and some silly pictures, we all got back on the coach to go to our accommodation – Hardangertun Holiday Park. Unlike an ordinary hotel, we all stayed in cabins, surrounded by mountains and a massive fjord. During our stay in the cabins, we had to make our own breakfasts and make sure we kept our cabin clean throughout the 4 days. This included having to do chores before we left. Although this seems quite weird to do on a school trip, it brought a sense of independence and was quite fun because of how unusual it is.
On the second day we did part of a very famous journey called “Norway in a Nutshell”. This included a boat ride across a fjord and the Flam railway train trip through the mountains. The third day included glacier hiking on Folgefonna glacier where we got to learn about the many threats the glacier is facing due to climate change; however, the biggest threats we faced was a nearly lost phone and a dramatic fall.
On the fourth day we all managed to hike for approximately 6 hours with a total of a 600m elevation across our journey. The hike was very tiring, but the views of Norwegian nature were worth the intensity. We then drove to Bergen where we had an absolute blast in a pizza restaurant. Our final day included a 2-hour guided tour around Bergen by two lovely tour guides. Later, we had some free time where many decided on the cultural history of Bergen, whilst some decided to go on the funicular which allowed for some amazing views and great photos with a massive troll. Some highlights of the trip included the lovely food we got from our chef Majic in the holiday park, Mr Brown’s 15-minute fact session about churches whilst we waited for a lost bag to arrive to us, the “Norway quiz”, Miss Heard’s ‘nonchalantness’ throughout the whole trip, Mrs Atkins – the phone grabber, Miss Percival’s love for trolls, the paper plate awards at the end, and the hundreds of memories made. We would like to say a massive thank you to Mrs Atkins, Mr Brown and Miss Percival, but most of all Miss Heard for organising and planning such an incredible and unforgettable trip.
