WW1 Battlefields Trip to France with Year 9
The WW1 Battlefields Trip took place from 5th of November to 7th of November 2025. We had been learning about World War 1 in history lessons and this trip was dedicated to all the lives lost and the deeper history behind The Great War. We visited many fascinating places where the war took place such as: Bayernwald (Croonaert Wood), Sunken lane, Newfoundland Park, Lochnagar Crater, Essex Farm Cemetery and Dressing Station and Sanctuary Wood (Hill 62 Museum). These beautifully preserved memorials of The Great War are perfect for taking a walk back in time and to revisit the lives of the WW1 soldiers. We all thoroughly enjoyed this trip, especially the “In Flanders Fields” exhibition in Ypres.
We also got the opportunity to visit and pay our tributes at the British, Indian and Commonwealth, German and French cemeteries around Ypres and The Somme. We even got to pay our respects at quite a few student relatives graves. It was so cool to see all of these moments from the war frozen in time. It was like we were there when it happened. There were also some trenches we had the pleasure of exploring, some even had tunnels!
They were amazing, however we had a mini heart attack moment when Mr Price jumped out and scared us at the end of the tunnel. We couldn't have had this amazing learning experience without our wonderful tour guide, John Cameron - Webb, and our amazing teachers from the history department: Mr Price, Mr Jordan, Miss Flynn and Miss Thornicroft! I thank you all on behalf of all the students who participated on this trip.
