Required for April/September 2023

Part Time hours considered

Waingels is a very successful 11 to 18 comprehensive school serving its local community. Our successes and achievements can be attributed to our commitment to establish and grow a Better Never Stops culture, providing a safe, inclusive and rich learning environment where students feel safe and valued, founded on respectful relationships for all. Our ethos and culture are values based. We set high standards and expect all our students and staff to be respectful, kind, resilient and proud of our school, our achievements and our community.

Our values underpin our “Waingels Ready” expectations that we have for everyone within the Waingels community. These expectations form the basis of everything we do, and everything we believe in as a school and as a community.

We are very pleased with our Ofsted feedback (February 2018) and how it has endorsed the achievements, improvements and direction that we are travelling in. Ofsted noted that:

- Waingels “continues to be a good school…where standards are rising rapidly”

- Staff feel that they are “valued as their opinions are considered when reshaping practices” and that  “people have the courage to try new things and we share success”

- “Pupils behave well in lessons and have a good attitude towards learning”

- “As a result of improvements that leaders have implemented, standards are rising rapidly”

We are also very proud of the achievements of our students. Under the new measures, our students at Key Stage 4 made very good progress. We are delighted that the vast majority of our students stay on to our Sixth Form and that 97% of our leavers gain a place at University or choose to enter apprenticeships and employment.

Our students follow an academic core curriculum throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This includes the study of History, Geography and a Language as well as English, Maths and Science. But our students also have the opportunity to do a range of practical and vocational subjects including a wide range of creative and performing arts, physical education and other humanities like Business Studies, Psychology and Economics.

The successful candidate will work predominantly to support our students’ literacy.  We support our students through intervention focused around phonics, reading fluency, reading comprehension, and inference skills, well as writing and oracy. Our goal is to ensure all students can access their curriculum and achieve their full potential.

There will be some teaching of English involved in this role.  In English we regularly review our curriculum to ensure that our students experience and enjoy a diverse range of literature that allows them to explore different cultures.  Whilst preparing our students with the necessary skills to undertake their examinations, our focus is to instil a love of literature within our pupils. We offer both English Language and English Literature at A Level.

The department is well resourced, with interactive Smart Boards in every classroom, a dedicated office for the staff and a brand-new reading room based within the department.

We feel it is important that students have the opportunity to see the texts they study in action and therefore arrange a number of extracurricular activities throughout the year including theatre trips to London including Romeo and Juliet, Jekyll and Hyde, Matilda, a Christmas Carol and War Horse.

Outside the formal curriculum we offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities and clubs. Our students travel the world – trips have included China, Poland, Berlin, Skiing in Utah, and Barcelona, along with many opportunities to attend fieldwork, theatres and museums more locally. Our students are also very active in the community working alongside local and overseas charities to raise money for good causes.

If you feel your values and ethos align with ours, this is an exciting opportunity for you! We are looking for someone with energy and vision that is ambitious for themselves and the young people of the school. You will have a growth mindset and believe in offering dynamic English learning across Key Stages.
