Part Time Teacher of Food

ECT/MPS/UPS

Part time

September 2023

Waingels is a very successful 11 to 18 Comprehensive school serving its local community. Our successes and achievements can be attributed to our commitment to establish and grow a Better Never Stops culture, providing a safe, inclusive and rich learning environment where students feel safe and valued, founded on respectful relationships for all. Our ethos and culture are values based. We set high standards and expect all our students and staff to be respectful, kind, resilient and proud of our school, our achievements and our community. The successful candidate will join a highly motivated department and will have the opportunity to teach at KS3, 4 and 5.

Our values underpin our “Waingels Ready” expectations that we have for everyone within the Waingels community. These expectations form the basis of everything we do, and everything we believe in as a school and as a community.

We are very pleased with our Ofsted feedback (February 2018) and how it has endorsed the achievements, improvements and direction that we are travelling in. Ofsted noted that:

- Waingels “continues to be a good school…where standards are rising rapidly”

- Staff feel that they are “valued as their opinions are considered when reshaping practices” and that “people have the courage to try new things and we share success”

- “Pupils behave well in lessons and have a good attitude towards learning”

- “As a result of improvements that leaders have implemented, standards are rising rapidly”

Our students follow an academic core curriculum throughout Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. This includes the study of History, Geography and a Language as well as English, Maths and Science. However, our students also have the opportunity to do a range of practical and vocational subjects including a wide range of creative and performing arts, physical education and other humanities like Business studies, Psychology and Economics.

The Food department is a small (but growing) successful, well resourced and supportive department. The team is currently made up of 1 Full Time Head of Subject, with some lessons taught by specialists from other departments. The department is also well supported by a full time technician. The training and professional development of staff is at the core of our ethos.

With regard to the curriculum, pupils undertake Food in Year 7 and 8, for half the year. They have 1 lesson a week and lessons are structured on mastering skills and underpinning theory through practical tasks. Pupils can choose to carry on their Food studies in Year 9. It is a popular choice with 4 groups currently in Year 9.

Pupils are then able to take Food Preparation and Nutrition at GCSE as an option. The EDUQAS board is followed. Lessons are planned with the aim of bringing the subject to life and pupils are encouraged to adapt and plan practical work to their own preferences.

The Food Preparation and Nutrition department aims provide opportunities for pupils to bring learning to life, for example, running competitions, hosting cooking clubs, running a pop up restaurant and actively searching for opportunities and visits for pupils to get involved with, both inside and outside the classroom.

If you feel your values and ethos align with ours, this is an exciting opportunity for you!
